Our Most Anticipated Video Games of 2024

By February 1, 2024Author's Opinions, Gaming9 min read

It’s about a month into 2024, and the momentum of video game releases in 2023 has already continued. From large releases such as RGG’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth to surprise hits like Palworld, 2024 is shaping up to be another great year for video games.

But what will be the gems for the year? While there may be fantastic games we may not expect, like Hi-Fi Rush in 2023, there are quite a few promising games on the horizon.

I asked the members of the OU Esports Media & News Team what their most anticipated (or hoped for) games of the year are, and here are the results:

Continuing the Little Nightmares series, Supermassive Games’ Little Nightmares III is a stand-alone, puzzle-platform adventure game slated for release in 2024. This newest installment follows Low and Alone, two kids navigating The Nowhere. Little Nightmares III is set to add an online co-op mode, though players can choose to play independently with an AI companion.

Media Member Trinity Rivers is thrilled about the new installment.

“As an avid fan of the Little Nightmares franchise since its initial release in April 2017, I am very excited for this game,” Rivers said. “As the previous two games followed the lives of Six and Mono, it will be interesting to see how these new characters are introduced and the role they will play.”

Little Nightmares III does not have a current release date but is expected to be on Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and can be wishlisted on Steam.

First announced in 2019, the sequel to Hollow Knight has been a long time coming. Hollow Knight: Silksong is a Metroidvania-style game that is expected to expand on the world and gameplay of the first game. While the announcement created a lot of buzz, though, there have been few updates in the years since.

News Writer Kate Leach hopes this is the year that this highly-anticipated sequel will finally release.

“After being introduced to Hollow Knight’s intricate world and robust combat system, I can only hope that Hollow Knight: Silksong lives up to the lofty expectations set by fans like me,” Leach said.

While there is no indicator that Hollow Knight: Silksong will even release this year, it is expected to be playable on Playstation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and can be wishlisted on Steam.

Elden Ring was a hit when it came out in 2022, and its fans have been gearing up for its planned DLC for a while. Shadow of the Erdtree was announced in Feb. 2023, but few details have been given about its contents. Nevertheless, it is expected to be a significant expansion to the game’s story, and the hype has only grown with the secrecy behind the DLC.

News Writer Jack Lederman is geared up for what the DLC could bring.

“I need more of a challenge,” Lederman said. “And I’m expecting this DLC will bring that challenge to the game.”

There have been multiple speculations about the DLC’s release date, but so far there is no confirmation from FromSoftware.

Unlike the previous games on this list, Skull and Bones is a new setting from Ubisoft. This online, open-world game allows players to rise the ranks of piracy on the open seas, whether alone, with friends, or with other players they encounter.

Ubisoft has announced a year’s worth of free content updates for players, broken up into four seasons. Each season will include new ships, rewards, and a legendary boss for players to defeat.

News Writer Katlyn Don Carlos is curious to see how the game turns out.

“Anytime a new pirate game comes out, I will be playing it,” Don Carlos said. “I’m really excited to see what Ubisoft does with the concept.”

Skull and Bones is set to release on Feb. 16, with a free open-beta release from Feb. 8-11. The game will be playable on PC, Playstation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and can be bought through Ubisoft or Epic Games.

Released in 2000, Jet Set Radio was an action platforming game highly acclaimed for its soundtrack and visual style. Since then, many creators have given nods to the game as inspiration, most recently Bomb Rush Cyberfunk.

But a main game in the series hasn’t been released since 2002 with Jet Set Radio Future, and fans haven’t heard much about the series in general since 2013, with the release of a port to newer consoles.

That all changed at The Game Awards in 2023, with the tease of a Jet Set Radio game along with a bundle of other SEGA properties, including Crazy Taxi and Streets of Rage. Fans are expecting this new game to be a revival, not a pure remake, but the full details haven’t been released yet.

Media Lead Kaori Thomas hopes this potential revival will breathe new life into the style.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was one of my favorite games of 2023,” Thomas said. “It’ll be fun to see if SEGA can reclaim the crown, and I’m praying Hideki Naganuma, the original composer, makes a comeback.”

There’s no definitive date for the release of the Jet Set Radio game, but it wouldn’t be surprising if SEGA announces the release dates of some of their teased games by the summer.

Arguably the most popular installment of the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy 7 has found a new generation of fans with its remakes. This year, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second part of the remake trilogy, will be released this year.

News Lead Will Edmonds is sure Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be one of the biggest releases of the year, and is particularly interested in its story.

“The game is going to continue the story into a new direction,” Edmonds said. “I’m excited to see how Cloud’s journey differs from the original Final Fantasy 7.”

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will release on Feb. 29 on Playstation 5.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the sequel to the 2012 action role-playing game Dragon’s Dogma by Capcom. Taking on the role of the “Arisen,” the player must handle monsters, quests, and a dispute between kingdoms to defeat a legendary dragon.

A seamless, open world much larger than the first game has been teased, along with more dynamic interactions between the player and the people they encounter.

News Writer Drake Kojnik hopes the game will meet his expectations.

“The first game had such a grand vision, but I feel like it fell short,” Kojnik said. “Hopefully, this sequel will be the realization of those grand visions.”

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is set to release on Mar. 22, and will be playable on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and can be pre-purchased on Steam.

Ever since its release in 2022, God of War: Ragnarok has captivated fans with its storytelling and gameplay. While its roguelike DLC, Valhalla, released in late 2023, rumors are already abound of what could be next for the popular franchise.

Not only do some believe a game starring Kratos’s son, Arteus, is in the works, but there is also speculation of the original God of War trilogy being remastered. Neither of these rumors have been confirmed by Sony or Santa Monica, but that hasn’t stopped fans from getting excited about a potential 2024 release.

News Writer Mason Strand is letting himself dream of a 2024 God of War game.

God of War is an excellent franchise that has produced so many memorable gaming moments for me,” Strand said. “I hope to see more of the franchise soon, especially exploring Arteus’s character further.”

While it is unknown if the rumors are true, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear some news related to the God of War franchise this upcoming year.

A screenshot from The Mermaid's Tongue

Rounding out the list is my personal choice, The Mermaid’s Tongue. The third installment in SFB Games’s Detective Grimoire series, this point-and-click mystery builds on the world of its predecessors and follows Detective Grimoire and his assistant, Sally, to a murder investigation on a submarine. Here, it is believed the eccentric captain, Magnus Mortuga, was killed by something held in a sealed stone cauldron, but is that all there is to it?

I’m captivated by another chapter in the world SFB games has created.

I’ve loved mysteries and puzzle games since I was a kid. Tangle Tower, the previous installment in this series, brought me back into those loves, with its vibrant characters and creative dialogue enhancing the experience. I’m so excited to see where the developers continue to take these games and this world.

The Mermaid’s Tongue does not have a set date yet, but since SFB Games also has another release planned for the year, Crow Country, it’s possible this other game will come out before The Mermaid’s Tongue. A demo can be played currently, and the game can be wishlisted on Steam.

Every year is sure to bring its share of hits, surprises, and disappointments regarding video game releases. But after the year video games had in 2023, expectations are high for releases in 2024. Will they live up to the hype, or will we find ourselves thinking about what could have been at the end of the year?

As they say, only time will tell.
