OU Giving Day April 14, 2022 – A Day of University Wide Fundraising

OVERVIEW

On April 14, 2022 The University of Oklahoma will launch it’s annual philanthropic day of giving aimed at supporting our programming across the entire surface of OU. This year the department of Esports & Co-Curricular Innovation which encompasses several various brands, hosts a community of over 2,700 members, has over 160 students in 6 different pillars of development, and awards scholarships focused on path to industry will host a 24 hour live stream from 11:45PM on April 13, 2022 to 12:15AM on April 14th. This article will serve as your TV Guide to our day of programming.

If you found about OU Giving Day through us but have no interest in contributing to our purpose we want to make sure we let know there is a university wide opportunity to impact all sorts of programs by heading HERE.

OUR FOCUS

This year, all donations and support will be focused on direct student impact through our Solidus scholarships. We’ve had a transformative year in further university elevation, program growth, and have a ton of developments to share in the upcoming year, but we do not want to ever lose our focus on community and impacting students through growing opportunities. Since Spring 2021 we have been been awarding scholarships to students across all of our various programs promoting inclusion, diversity, and allowing students to take further control of their own paths through our topic. So you heard it here. All support raised will 100% be direct at student scholarships through our Solidus Fund.

OU GIVING DAY CHALLENGES

OU Advancement has put out several challenges to the entire university community to emphasize during certain hours of the day. Those challenges can be found by click on the Giving Day logo. We will be promoting various challenges throughout our streams. Help us out get boosts in contributions to our students by timing your support with these pushes.

ABOUT THE SOLIDUS AWARDS

Forest Dayne “Solidus” Sharp was a huge influence in the gaming community at OU, in Norman and across the state of Oklahoma. He is largely recognized as the primary founding energy behind one of Oklahoma’s premier gaming events called Super Bit Wars which has existed since 2012. Forest personified the same energy that founded the current developments of The University of Oklahoma’s gaming and esports programs focusing on grassroots community growth for inclusion as priority. Forest graduated from The University of Oklahoma in 2007 with a Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology and was finishing his thesis for his Master’s degree in the History of Science which was posthumously awarded in 2012. Forest passed in 2011 at the age of 28.

OUR FIRST REPORT CARD

Tuesday, April 12th, 2022, we will release our first program report card highlighting the first ever Solidus Awardees, our GPAs, and academic diversity. The GPA averages next to this represent the entire 163 developmental student roster in green and the current 39 scholarship awardees in red. OU ESPORTS GIVING DAY 24 HOUR PROGRAM SCHEDULE

Several things to note. Click on each time slot to get a description of what will be going during that program. Throughout each program we will be including a graphic that shows which of our six pillars are being called upon to program and make this happen. It should help our audience connect dots between our programs and practical application. Lastly, during the gaps in programming we will be showing our OU XP documentary created by now alum Stingray Schuller and various other montages, collages, and student built commercials.

Spend the first 30 minutes of the work day with OU Esports & Co-Curricular Innovation Director Moog as he talks about what the business hours programming will showcase and some things to look out for as we kick off our panels and information programming.

9AM-10AM - INTERCOLLEGIATE ESPORTS - SCHOLARSHIP PANEL 1 (RADPANDA)

Before this panel even hit the timeline you’ve seen students in our other programs do what they love and how they contribute to our developments. This is what we mean about path to industry! Now let’s focus on what many think this is exclusively about with intercollegiate esports as Solidus Leadership Awardee and Intercollegiate Esports Director Radpanda facilitates a conversation with the one of our most high achieving and ambitious head coaches, Thumper of Overwatch who also serves as our Head of Coaching Staff in this pillar. This is our equivalent to coaches Venables, Gasso, etc. at The University of Oklahoma.

You’ve heard from our first ever to externally recruit and offer scholarships Head Coach Thumper of our Overwatch program. Now let’s hear from two more scholarship enabled varsity developments with Head Coach Ender of League of Legends and Head Coach Bardo of Valorant as we get more perspective on what this takes.

The other thing to realize is while we have scholarship enabled and varsity elevated titles in development in Overwatch, Rocket League, League of Legends, and Valorant we also have many teams that are classified as club and are developing and building up towards being equal to their peer elevated titles. Let’s take a moment and showcase some teams in this tier who are pushing hard to normalize their culture, elevate their gameplay, and help advocate for their promotion.

What does it take to run this monster of a community and department? A lot! But we are adamant about never forgetting who we are and the students who have helped build this powerhouse of a development at The University of Oklahoma. Let’s check in with Solidus Leadership Awardee and OU Gaming Club President Slaw as he plays some games with his peer leadership member and take a chill look at what it takes to be at the helm.

7PM-8PM - THE FUTURE & AMA PANEL (MOOG)

Five and a half years of development with full university endorsement doesn’t mean the real clock just started. There have been several projects in the fire for years and they are all finally coming to fruition. Here is your chance to ask anything to the first collegiate esports staff developer in Oklahoma from 2016 and now the first ever fully dedicated Director of Esports & Co-Curricular Innovation at OU anything you want. Moog plans to walk us through future scholarship changes, program initiatives, and unveil some things the internal community haven’t even heard yet alongside some founding alumni leadership.

Don’t miss this especially if you are the parents of potentially prospective students to OU and have interests in gaming and esports!

Mike "Moog" Aguilar

Mike "Moog" Aguilar is the Director of Esports & Co-Curricular Innovation at OU. He also works for OU IT doing project management and business analysis as well as an adjunct instructor for the Gaylord College of Journalism & Mass Communication. He is a US Army veteran, has worked for Apple, worked in the public sector, and is a photographer of two decades. Mike has been a gamer since the Atari in the 80s and has been pioneering esports and gaming development and innovation at OU since 2016.
